Computing Information
Access to the majority of the University's computing services—including access to Blackboard, the computing labs, wireless network, software downloads, andUniversity e-mail account maintenance—is controlled through your network ID (NetID) and password.
Activate Your NetID
Go to the Syracuse University NetID Services site and click "Activate your NetID." Enter your SU ID and PIN—your PIN is the 2-digit day of your birthday followed by the 4-digit year of your birthday (DDYYYY)—then click "Submit." Your NetID should appear at the top of the screen. You will then need to select a password for your NetID and a challenge question which will be used if you forget your password and need to reset it.
Before you begin the process of selecting a password, see the rules for NetID passwords and tips to create a password that you will be better able to remember.
University E-mail
All official communication from Syracuse University will be sent to your University e-mail account. Your University e-mail account is NetID@syr.edu. Your "@syr.edu" addres is an e-mail address not an e-mail mailbox. It is an e-mail forwarding mechanism. Mail sent to this address can be sent to any mailbox you direct it to. You must read your mail from the mailbox you associate with your "@syr.edu" address.
You may read mail delivered to your "@syr.edu" address through MyMail—the University's student e-mail mailbox system—or you may direct your mail to another mailbox such as your internet services provider (AOL, Roadrunner, etc.) or an internet web-based e-mail account (Yahoo, hotmail, gmail, etc.). You may forward you "@syr.edu" address to only one mailbox. The default mailbox for your "@syr.edu" address is MyMail. To direct your mail to another mailbox, go to NetID Services, select "Manage your NetID," and log in. Click "Change syr.edu mail delivery" and enter the e-mail address you want your mail to be delivered to and click "Submit."
MyMail
MyMail is Syracuse University's student e-mail system. It provides you with 50MB of space for mail and is web-based. See MyMail Getting Started Quick Tour to see the features of MyMail. To access MyMail go to http://mymail.syr.edu and enter your NetID and password. (There is also a convenient link on this site's sidebar.)
If you are a former SU student and previously used OrangeMail, please note that MyMail has many features not available in OrangeMail. See the quick tour above for information on these features.
Blackboard
You must activate your NetID and request access to Blackboard before your can log in.
Once your NetID is activated, to initiate access to Blackboard, go to http://whitman.syr.edu/getbbaccess. Complete the form and click Submit. When access has been provided, a message will be sent to the e-mail address entered on the form.
When you have received notification that access has been granted, the link to get to the University's Blackboard system is http://blackboard.syr.edu. You should bookmark this site as you will use it often. Enter your NetID and the password you created when you activated your NetID in the appropriate boxes and click Login. (There is also a convenient link on this site's sidebar.)
When you have successfully logged in you will see the main screen. Below the banner, there are four tabs: the Whitman tab, the Blackboard @ SU tab, the Courses tab, and the Community tab.
